Relatives of My Grandma Bessie Steele Davis
April 25, 2012 at 7:05 pm
Peggy Hacker RobertsTony, she and I were raised in the same house....at different times, of course. The house I posted last night on your page was where she was raised. She was a beauty! I love these pictures! Keep them coming!
April 25, 2012 at 8:38 pm
Tony DavisYes, she was striking. I was surprised when I ran across this photo.

Peggy Hacker RobertsTony, if you don't mind, I want to save all of these photos, so I can share them with my brothers, sisters, and cousins. This is so exciting!
April 25, 2012 at 9:08 pm
Tony DavisThat's why I put them out there. It is all about sharing. I have another batch of these relativities to put out as soon as I can retouch them. Many of the photos you are seeing are in pretty bad shape when I start. This one was in good shape, but sometimes i have to reconstruct faces or portions that are torn. That's why it takes me so long.
April 25, 2012 at 9:12 pm
Peggy Hacker RobertsI don't what you are doing, but they look great! I am loving this! I have a ton that I need to scan, myself.

Nacy Morris's father
April 25, 2012 at 7:05 pm
Tony, the story goes, that Wiley buried his gold somewhere on our property. He supposedly said, "Roosevelt ain't a gettin' my gold." I remember people bringing metal detectors and searching around the house and yard when they first came out. They never found any gold, though. Another story was that thieves stole his horses from the old barn. (It's still standing.) He found them over the hill from our place, shot the thieves, (I don't know if he killed them or not) and brought his horses home. I had never seen a photo of him, but those stories sure fit with the look he has in his eyes! What a character he must have been!
April 25, 2012 at 9:48 pm
Wow can I repete the story in my book? I am quite deep into this type of thing. LOL
April 25, 2012 at 9:52 pm
You have my permission. I'm not sure how accurate it is though. It's just stuff I've heard repeated over the years. One of Lile's daughters is still living, the last I knew. I'll ask Mom tomorrow....I think it was Minnie Faye. She would be a good person to interview to find out if these stories are true, since Wiley was her grandfather. I met her, but I can't remember which one it was for sure. Her son and his wife came up and visited with me for a few minutes while they were here. It was only a summer or two ago. Mom may have an address for her. Are you writing a book of family history?
April 25, 2012 at 10:06 pm
Well it is a Family History and tree. It has grown to over a thousand pages. I have our tree back beyond the American revolution.
April 25, 2012 at 10:14 pm
Tony, this man was Lile's father-in-law. He was Nacy Morris' father.
April 25, 2012 at 10:26 pm
Wow, that's a lot of information!

April 25, 2012 at 7:05 pm
I think the man in the back, looking down, is Jack (Jackson) Hacker, Ma Hacker's (Ellen) husband. He died before I was old enough to remember, in 1949 or 50, but I have seen other photos of him.
April 25, 2012 at 10:24 pm
Looks a little like Jason Walton. LOL

April 25, 2012 at 7:05 pm
that is Bob Davis sitting in front, but I cant recognize the rest.
April 25, 2012 at 9:28 pm
Me too, I may recognize the man on the left, but jut cannot place him.
April 25, 2012 at 9:32 pm
The man in the back row on the right might be Lester Steele. I remember him when he was older and it kind of looks like him. The little short one on the left might be Add (his name was probably Addison. I'll show this photo to Mom. She may recognize more of them. I remember Ma Hacker's brothers Lester, Add, and Critt (probably Crittendon) coming to visit her and Bessie when I was a kid. Add was short and Critt was tall. That might be Ma Hacker (Ellen) standing in front of Critt, the tall guy. It looks somewhat like her face structure.
April 25, 2012 at 10:19 pm
Great information, I have all their names but no faces to put with them. All the documents I have all refer to Ad or Add, nothing has Addison.
April 25, 2012 at 10:22 pm
Peggy I remember them I think Jim McGee looks like Lester if that is Lester and I think you are right. Add had a lot of money but he hid it around I think I have been told and had no children.
April 26, 2012 at 8:07 pm
Tony, maybe I made that up about Addison and Crittendon. I have a big imagination. We must check that out from other sources. I may not be a reliable one. At least, I think I got Delilah's name right, even though all the family called her Lile. You already had that info, though. I believe that I'm right about this. The great-grandfather, Jim Steele had two wives and two sets of children. Sophie was his second wife. I know that Add was Ma Hacker (Ellen's) half brother. Louise, I remember going to visit Add and Lizzie. I have a story that Add would tell about the day he and Lizzie went to get married. He said he got on the train at Bond and was all dressed up to attend his wedding ceremony. He said when Lizzie boarded the train at Greenmount, she scanned the crowd of passengers and very disappointedly announced to a friend or relative that was traveling with her, "I knew he wouldn't come." He said he was looking so good in his wedding finery that she didn't even recognize him. He would tell this story and laugh at Lizzie. She would giggle and never did contradict him.
April 26, 2012 at 9:04 pm
I left this part out: They had made plans to meet on the train and travel together to wherever the ceremony was being performed.

This photo is taken in my mom's yard where I played as a child. I can tell by the lay of the land.

Wow! I never knew what her name was! She would have been the first lady that lived in the house where I was raised....that is if she was Wiley's first wife. I have a sneaking suspicion that she dipped a little snuff! Haha.....Thanks, Tony.....These pictures are so fascinating to me!
April 25, 2012 at 9:01 pm
This one I don't remember.
April 25, 2012 at 9:23 pm
Louise, I don't remember her either. I knew Wiley Morris built our house, but I never heard his wife's name mentioned. She was Nacy's mother, I guess. I know Wiley was his father....but he could have had more than one wife. Anyway, Nacy was Delilah or "Lile's" husband, and that's who we bought the farm from.
April 25, 2012 at 9:31 pm
She was the second wife. The first wife's name was Anna Little.

This is Nacy and Delilah Morris that my parents bought their farm from in 1952. Delilah was Ma Hacker's sister.

Peggy isn't this so wonderful to see these old pictures. It sure takes us back a few years.
April 25, 2012 at 9:21 pm
Louise, I love the history. This was before our time, but so interesting to see, especially since I was raised in the house they once lived in. This baby was our parent's age.
April 25, 2012 at 9:25 pm
This is so unreal I have hear of Sophia all my childhood life/
April 26, 2012 at 8:03 pm
Louise, you know that Ma Hacker (Ellen) had a daughter named Sophie, too, don't you?

Naomi was a sweet lady. She would bring Ronnie with her when she came to visit us when I was a teenager. He liked me, because I would take him outside to play. Look at those cap pistols and those holsters!
April 25, 2012 at 9:13 pm
Oh my gosh here is Marlene, I forgot about Ronnie. I would love to see Marlene.
April 25, 2012 at 9:19 pm

I use to ride bikes with her.
