Peggy Hacker RobertsI love the cellar! It's still there, I believe.
July 12, 2012 at 8:13 am
Mary Etta Morgan-CombsThat,s right Peggy. I can and put potatoes in that every year.
July 12, 2012 at 9:25 pm
Peggy Hacker RobertsMary Etta, I know your ancestors, who have passed on, would be so proud that you still use that little cellar! Your grandmother had such a sweet face!
July 12, 2012 at 9:53 pm
BJ Baldwin RudderI miss that generation!
July 12, 2012 at 9:56 pm
Peggy Hacker RobertsThey were so self-sufficient....Raised their food, dried it, cured it, canned it....meat and vegetables. They always had plenty to eat and shared with others less fortunate. People today would starve before they would do all that work!
July 12, 2012 at 10:01 pm
Peggy Hacker RobertsBJ, Mom and I passed your family's old homeplace day before yesterday, and we were talking about how Edith used to have a little garden across the road from the house in a small corner next to the creek where the road starts to go up the hill. She also had another much bigger one.
July 12, 2012 at 10:10 pm
BJ Baldwin RudderPeggy, we didn't buy much at the store. She had garden food that carried us through the winter. I didn't appreciate it then...but I sure do now!!
July 12, 2012 at 10:53 pm
Peggy Hacker RobertsI know, BJ. We were the same way....Canned peaches, dried apple pies, cakes made from scratch with our own chicken's eggs, and blackberry and apple jellies were our sweet treats. Sometimes we had homemade chocolate fudge. Staples like sugar, flour, cornmeal, and coffee were bought from the store. Milk came from the cow, but I never could drink it. However, I did love the homemade buttermilk that I often had to churn. The fresh milk smelled too much like the cow!
July 12, 2012 at 11:37 pm
BJ Baldwin RudderDo you remember Emery McQueen's store? He would add up what we got there with a pencil and paper. Never saw a cash register or even an adding machine. Before my time, my parents had they flour and meal made. I guess it was easier to buy it later on. We had very little garbage...everything was in containers that we reused. The food scraps went to the dogs, cats or pigs.
July 12, 2012 at 11:41 pm
Peggy Hacker RobertsI remember Emery's store. We would stop there some, if we were over that way, but mostly we went to Carson Moore's Grocery. I do remember how Emery would always ask before he added up your order, "And what else?" I remember saving the scraps, (and this is funny) but I don't remember us having a trash can. We have the old ledgers from my father-in-law's store when people ran an account. He listed each thing they charged with the amount item by item.
